Academic health centers as well as community-based hospitals can be classified as general hospitals. The hospitals are broad in their admissions, as well as the fact that they specialize in treating acute illnesses and patients who need relatively short-term care. The number of beds at community general hospitals varies. There is, however, an array of healthcare professionals (including nurses, technologists, dietitians, and physiotherapists) and basic diagnostic equipment in a general hospital. A general hospital’s complexity is partly due to advances in diagnostic and treatment technologies, in addition to the essential services it provides to its patients. In addition to being the hospital’s CEO, the administrator reports to the board. There are a number of specialized departments in a large hospital, and each one is overseen by its own department head.

Hospitals in developed countries generally specialize in one type of disease or patient. A specialized health service is often located within a hospital or a satellite operation of a large university center where postgraduate teaching is extensive. Some specialized institutions have been less needed or fewer in number due to changing conditions or treatment. For example, tuberculosis, leprosy, and mental hospitals have all decreased their numbers. On the other hand, the number of specialist surgical centers and cancer treatment centers has increased.

It was believed that a stay of at least two years was required to cure tuberculosis between 1880 and 1940, even if it was still in an early stage; a permanent cure was not regarded as being feasible. X-ray programs and antibiotics have enabled tuberculosis to not only be treated but also prevented it from requiring specialized treatment facilities. Approximately 7,000 leper houses were located in France alone during the 14th century. Many of the earliest IM-long-term care facilities for lepers were also built in England.

The historical function of long-term care facilities was to provide care to the elderly, the frail, and those with chronic and disabling illnesses, especially if the residents were poor. Most residents received minimal medical and nursing care. However, long-term care facilities are now playing an increasingly significantly crucial role in health care. Acute hospitals may be converted to long-term care facilities. There are also facilities with residents who require professional health care but do not require the intensive care that acute-care facilities provide. Long-term-care facilities, therefore, are staffed with health professionals who are trained to provide care for patients requiring extensive assistance with daily living or who are preparing to live at home or with a family member. Long-term-care facilities are a valuable extension of hospital health care that conserves hospital resources while improving the prospects for chronically disabled patients.
