I have enjoyed using my ’98 Dodge 12-valve as a tow truck, daily driver, and occasional off-roader. The vehicle has been equipped with BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires for the last few years. The tires have just over 60,000 miles on the tread. Even though the tread was not worn down to the wear bars, I didn’t want to drive on them another winter, so I switched to another tire. One of my sources for researching tire designs was the Tire Rack website, which uses a rating system based on consumer feedback. In the scoring system, “Excellent” is given a score between 6.5 and 8.5, and “Superior” is given a score between 8.6 and 10 points. Based on the final scores, only a few tries scored in all categories as “Excellent” or “Superior”. Among them was the General Grabber AT2.

For over 100 years, General Tire has manufactured tires for automobiles and trucks, with truck tires being a major part of the company’s history since 1928. Continental AG of Hannover, West Germany, expressed interest in General Tire in 1987 and eventually purchased it. Continental was and is one of the largest European tire companies, so the acquisition provided a strong, solid presence in the global tire market, and the company operates under the brand name Continental Tire North America today. The Grabber AT2 was approximately $50.00 cheaper per tire than a comparable-sized All-Terrain tire, considering the price was a consideration. My new tires were the General Grabber AT2 due to the substantial savings and much better rating.

For drivers of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles seeking exceptional traction on all terrains, Grabber AT2 offers year-round capability in wet or dry conditions, long wear and reliability.

The difference in diameter between my old 285/70/17 tires and my new 315/70/17 tires is the size difference. It is noticeable that the diameter grew from 32.8 inches to 34.4 inches, and I still have room to clear the front mud flaps when turning. I did, however, feel a very slight rubbing on the upper control arms (both sides) when the steering is fully locked. The highway fuel economy appears to be unchanged; I am still getting 20 mpg between 60 and 70 mph. In terms of weight ratings, both sizes can carry 3,195 pounds. For all H-rated tires and 40,000 miles for all V-rated tires, the General Grabber AT2 has a 50,000-mile tread-wear warranty. The tires are made in the United States.

Looks play a very important role in deciding whether to run a meatier tire. Due to my 3.54 gear ratio and automatic transmission, if I were to do heavy towing regularly, the 315/70/17 size tire may not be the best choice; the 285/70/17 would probably be a better selection. If it were a manual transmission or if it had 4.10 gears, the decision would be different. Despite the numbers, my 12-valve’s power output, which is dynoed at just over 540hp and 1,300 lb. ft. of torque makes turning the larger tire easy. I also like the look of the larger tire. Rams have famously large wheel wells. The Grabber AT2 fills those wells perfectly. Due to its aspect ratio (70), this tire has more sidewall than a 60- or 50-series tire.

A General Tire All-Terrain tire, the Grabber AT2 is designed and developed for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles that require a tire that performs well in all conditions while providing a degree of off-road traction. Grabber AT2 is designed to meet these expectations and provide excellent traction on all terrains, especially on wet and snowy surfaces. Chip and tear-resistant, highly sipped all-terrain tread compound is one of the features of the General The Grabber AT2. Its 5-Row Tread Pattern is designed to provide maximum traction both in wet weather conditions as well as in harsh winter driving conditions. The moderately aggressive computer-optimized tread pattern allows the tire to remain relatively quiet on the road and on the highway. Because of its dual steel belts and 2-ply polyester cord sidewalls, the General Grabber AT2 chassis structure provides strength and durability with a uniform ride.
